A fleet of armed ships. The Spanish Armada was the fleet sent by Philip II against England in 1588.

Revise: The ArmadaIn 1588, Philip II of Spain sent the Armada against Elizabeth I’s England. His aim was not simply to defeat English ships: he intended to land an army, overthrow Elizabeth and restore Catholicism. The fleet therefore had to protect an invasion as well as fight at sea.

Revise: Mary Queen of Scots and SpainMary's execution added to these existing tensions. It should therefore be understood as a further cause of hostility, not as the sole explanation for the Armada.
Separate the failure to invade from losses during the retreat. Storms destroyed ships returning home, but the Armada had already failed to join Parma’s army.
For the Armada's failure, connect English tactics, Spanish planning problems and weather rather than treating one factor as the whole explanation.
Distinguish the defeat of the Armada in 1588 from the end of the war in 1604.
