Revise: Cromwell’s Rise to PowerThe Act in Restraint of Appeals, passed in 1533, declared that England was an ‘empire’. Here, ‘empire’ meant a realm independent of outside authority, not an overseas empire. The Act prevented appeals to Rome, allowing the marriage case to be settled by an English church court without Catherine appealing to the Pope.
