Revise: Mary, Queen of ScotsThe nobles imprisoned Mary at Lochleven Castle and forced her to abdicate in July 1567. Her infant son became James VI of Scotland. Mary escaped on 2 May 1568 and raised an army to recover her throne, but it was defeated at the Battle of Langside on 13 May.

Cleopatra tried negotiation, offering to abdicate in favour of her children and retire with Antony into private life. This shows that preserving her children’s position could matter more than keeping the throne herself. Her proposal was rejected.
