Specification 3.2a · Paper 1, Paper 3
A curved lake formed when a meander loop becomes cut off from the main river.
Revise: River Landforms: Erosional and Depositional FeaturesFlow into and out of the old loop slows, so sediment is deposited at its entrances. These deposits eventually seal the loop off from the main channel, leaving a curved ox-bow lake. Erosion creates the shortcut, but deposition completes the separation.
For ox-bow lakes, include both the flood cutting through the neck and deposition sealing the old loop.
