Revise: Causes of Global WarmingThe warmed surface then emits energy as infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases absorb some of this outgoing radiation and re-emit it in different directions, including back towards the surface. This slows the loss of energy to space and keeps the surface and lower atmosphere warmer than they would otherwise be.
