Revise: Natural HazardsA hazard is not the same as a disaster. A hazard involves potential harm; a disaster occurs when that harm actually happens. A storm threatening a settlement is a hazard.
Define a natural hazard in terms of its potential to harm people and property; actual harm distinguishes a disaster.
Do not assume that a larger natural event always causes a worse disaster. Exposure and people's ability to prepare and cope also matter.
