The proportion of a population living in urban areas at a particular time, usually expressed as a percentage.

Revise: Urbanisation in the UKApproximately 84% of the UK population lives in towns and cities. This means that the UK has a high degree of urbanisation: most people already live in urban settlements. It does not mean that 84% of the UK’s land is built up.
Population growth in a city is not automatically an increase in the region’s degree of urbanisation: the proportion living in urban areas must rise.
