Colonisation helped shape today’s development gap. European powers, including Britain, France, Portugal and Belgium, controlled territories overseas and exploited their resources and people. Wealth generated through this exploitation benefited the colonising powers, while controlled territories lost opportunities to direct resources towards their own development.
