Paper 1
A large-scale pattern of circulating air, involving movement at the surface, rising or sinking air, and a return flow higher in the atmosphere.
Revise: Atmospheric circulationA circulation cell combines these movements: air rises, moves through the upper atmosphere, sinks elsewhere and returns near the surface. However, the global system is more complicated than one simple convection loop between the equator and each pole.
For an explanation, link latitude, heating, air movement, pressure and rainfall rather than simply naming a circulation cell.

Specification 1.1a · Paper 1, Paper 3
A large-scale loop of atmospheric movement involving rising air, movement at altitude, sinking air and movement near the surface.
Revise: The Global Atmospheric Circulation SystemThe simplified global model has three circulation cells in each hemisphere: the Hadley, Ferrel and Polar cells. Their boundaries and associated pressure belts are approximate and shift with the seasons.
