Revise: Technological and institutional contextsSynchronised sound changed both filmmaking and exhibition. Dialogue now had to match the actors’ visible speech, and cinemas needed equipment to reproduce recorded sound. The Jazz Singer (1927), directed by Alan Crosland and starring Al Jolson, was a landmark feature incorporating synchronised dialogue.
