Social alienation

Social alienation means exclusion from society or the feeling of not belonging. The aliens give this idea a literal form: the boys encounter hostile outsiders, while they themselves are often regarded as threatening outsiders within their own city. The gang includes Black and mixed-race teenagers, and the film’s conflict with the police gives its account of exclusion a racial dimension.
