Changing language or behaviour according to the social setting or people present. In The Hate U Give, Starr does this partly to avoid racial stereotyping at school.

Starr changes how she speaks and behaves according to who surrounds her. This is code-switching. At school, she avoids language and behaviour that might expose her to racial stereotypes, even when white students use similar slang without facing the same judgement.
