Stanza 2 begins with the narrator’s ‘Young Hodge the drummer never knew — / Fresh from his Wessex home —’. ‘Fresh’ suggests someone recently arrived and inexperienced. ‘Never knew’ is especially poignant because death has removed any opportunity to learn.
