Treason

This distinction matters: Shakespeare was not simply reconstructing the past. His story of a Scottish king’s murder and a usurper’s downfall spoke to contemporary concerns about royal authority, treason and supernatural temptation. James became patron of Shakespeare’s acting company, which became the King’s Men in 1603.
