Stress

The speaker becomes ‘stranded’ (line 19), completing the movement from imagined coastal connection towards isolation. He describes this condition ‘as if the universe is a matter of one stress.’ (line 20). ‘Stress’ can mean emotional pressure, but it also means emphasis on a syllable.
