Here, remembering is not simply a deliberate act of looking back: the event seems to happen again against the speaker’s wishes.

Remains draws specifically on the experience of Guardsman Tromans, who served in Iraq in 2003 and subsequently suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. Armitage transformed soldiers’ accounts into poetry, giving public expression to experiences that might otherwise remain unheard. He became Poet Laureate in 2019, but the veterans’ testimony is the more important context for understanding this poem’s voice.
