Pessimism

Hardy wrote the poem in 1867. It appeared more than thirty years later in Wessex Poems and Other Verses (1898), his first published poetry collection. Its concentration on disappointment connects with the pessimism found across his writing: love offers no guarantee of happiness, and people can feel powerless before suffering or fate.
