Revise: ContextJohn Milton’s Paradise Lost, first published in 1667, retells the biblical fall of humanity. It includes God’s creation of Adam and Eve, Satan’s rebellion, and the loss of Eden. It is an epic poem, but Shelley brings its large questions about creation, obedience and exclusion into a prose novel about personal relationships.
