Necromancy

In Act 5 Scene 1, Prospero makes an especially unsettling claim: “graves at my command / Have waked their sleepers”. He describes raising the dead, an act of necromancy. Alongside his command over spirits, this claim connects his learned art with practices that Jacobean religious beliefs and witchcraft law treated as dangerous.
