Revise: 1st Date – She and 1st Date – HeThese are linked monologues, not a conversation. We hear thoughts that the speakers do not share with each other. Reading the woman’s account first, we might accept her conclusion that the man is absorbed in the music.

An extended speech by one person. Miss Emily’s explanation dominates the conversation while Kathy and Tommy listen.
Miss Emily’s long, largely uninterrupted monologue also makes Kathy and Tommy’s shock visible through their lack of speech. They do not need a dramatic verbal response for the reader to understand the scale of the loss. Their silence can suggest stunned disbelief and the habits of obedience developed under institutional authority, rather than an absence of feeling.
