Missionary

St John acknowledges his passion, but believes Rosamond would not be suited to the hardships of a missionary’s wife. He will not abandon his intended mission for love. His decision prepares the reader for his later proposal to Jane: he seeks the partner who fits his work, not the woman who most deeply attracts him.

Jane notices his physical reactions beneath his controlled appearance and encourages him to marry her. He refuses because he believes Rosamond would not suit the demanding life of a missionary’s wife.

St John intends to become a Christian missionary in India. His willingness to visit the sick and poor in harsh weather demonstrates courage and commitment. However, he also acknowledges his ambition, and refuses to marry Rosamond Oliver because he believes she would not suit missionary life, despite his attraction to her.
