Holodomor

The episode evokes resistance to Stalin’s forced collectivisation and the suffering of Ukrainian peasants during the Holodomor of 1932–1933. Soviet agricultural policies, coercive grain collection and harsh penalties intensified a devastating famine, which was concealed from foreign observers. Napoleon similarly hides the farm’s shortages from Whymper.
