Paper 1
Revise: EnidPinnock explains in her introduction that she wanted to make Enid the heroine because she could not recall seeing a hospital cleaner as the lead in a British play. This choice gives dramatic importance to work and suffering that other people may overlook. Enid’s heroism lies in endurance and care, not perfection: she makes sacrifices for her daughters, but her control and silence also damage their relationships.
