In Chapters 7 to 10 of Anita and Me, Meena begins to question two assumptions: that fitting into Tollington will make her secure, and that her Indian heritage holds her back. The village fete exposes hostility beneath familiar relationships. Nanima’s arrival then gives Meena a different source of confidence, while renewed contact with Anita reveals both her friend’s vulnerability and the differences between their homes.
