Gytrash

In Chapter 12, Jane encounters Rochester’s dog and horse on a lonely road at dusk. She remembers Bessie’s tales of “a North-of-England spirit called a ‘Gytrash,’” which takes animal forms. Childhood folklore supplies a pattern through which she initially interprets unfamiliar sights and sounds.
