Enigmatic

Pinnock describes Mai in her introduction as “an enigmatic figure” who “comes to have a powerful influence on all of them”. Enigmatic means mysterious or difficult to understand fully. Mai’s influence, however, becomes concrete: she listens to Enid, shelters Del, recognises Del’s abilities and eventually gives her the knowledge to help others.
