Paper 1
Revise: Plot overviewMeena pauses to describe Tollington, its inhabitants, her mother and earlier experiences. These digressions build the world in which her behaviour makes sense. They also establish the novel’s retrospective first-person form: an older Meena looks back on childhood, recreating the child’s excitement while allowing readers to recognise more than she understood then.
