Trust in someone’s ability to repay borrowed money. Antonio uses his reputation and expected trading income to secure a loan.
Revise: Money and tradeBecause Antonio cannot immediately provide cash, he offers his credit instead. His reputation becomes the means of financing Bassanio’s journey to Belmont. The romantic plot therefore grows directly out of a commercial transaction.

A reputation for being able and willing to repay borrowed money, allowing someone to borrow on the strength of that reputation.
Antonio has wealth invested at sea but cannot raise the necessary cash immediately. His instruction, ‘Try what my credit can in Venice do:’, therefore means that Bassanio should use Antonio’s reputation to find a lender. He turns social trust into a financial guarantee.
