Bluebeard

The concealed wife creates echoes of Bluebeard, the wealthy husband who hides murdered wives in a forbidden room. Thornfield’s locked interior makes domestic security dangerous: the man who offers Jane a home also controls access to a devastating secret. Rochester is not identical to Bluebeard, but the connection brings suspicion to the romantic image of the powerful master.
