Paper 2
Revise: Tea With Our GrandmothersIn Stanza 1, the speaker begins ‘The morning your habooba died / I thought of my ayeeyo’. Habooba is an Arabic word meaning ‘beloved woman’, used in Sudan to refer to a grandmother; ayeeyo is Somali for grandmother. Moving from ‘your’ to ‘my’ connects the friends through bereavement without making their family histories identical.
