Revise: The artillerymanThe artilleryman is a soldier who survives the destruction of his gun and later imagines a new future for humanity. Wells presents neither a straightforward hero nor a man who is useless from the beginning. He can be observant, cautious and resourceful, but his later confidence conceals a failure to turn ideas into action.
Trace the artilleryman’s development: traumatised survivor, useful companion, persuasive planner, then idle dreamer. Avoid describing him as lazy throughout.
Distinguish the artilleryman’s predictions and ambitions from events that actually happen. His underground society is a proposal, not an achievement.
