A word that expresses an action, event or state, such as ‘walks’, ‘happened’ or ‘is’.
Revise: Standard English and grammar‘Everyone’ takes ‘knows’; plural ‘they’ takes ‘were’; and ‘should have’ is the correct verb construction. ‘Should’ve’ can sound like ‘should of’, but its full form is ‘should have’.

Find the subject before checking the verb: a nearby plural noun may not be the word controlling agreement.
Use accurate terminology to support your explanation: naming a simile or verb is the beginning of a point, not the whole point.
Use terminology where it helps explain a choice; a precise comment on a verb can be more useful than an elaborate label.
