A writer’s viewpoint or way of understanding and presenting a subject.

The position from which someone understands and presents a subject, shaped by factors such as experience, role, time, place and purpose.

You compare the writers’ ideas and perspectives and explain how they are conveyed in two sources, drawing on the whole of both texts. Allow around 20 minutes for reading back, planning and answering. The paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes; AQA advises about 15 minutes initially reading the sources and questions, followed by about 45 minutes on Section A.

Compare perspectives, then explain how particular words, images, form or structural choices convey them. From June 2026, you do not need to match one method against another.

For Question 4, compare perspectives and explain how each is conveyed. You do not need to find matching techniques in both sources.

It is worth 14 marks and assesses AO3: comparing writers’ ideas and perspectives and the ways these are conveyed across texts. The question gives you a particular theme. In June 2023, that theme was escape; your answer needed to explore the writers’ attitudes towards escape, not compare everything you noticed in the extracts.

In Pearson Edexcel English Language 2.0, Paper 2 Question 6 is worth 16 marks and assesses AO3: comparing writers’ ideas and perspectives and how they convey them. You compare the main ideas, the points of view and their presentation, using evidence from both whole extracts.
