GCSE Design and Technology · key term
A programmable machine that carries out physical tasks automatically.
Used by AQA
Paper 1
Revise: IndustryRobotics involves the design and use of robots: programmable machines that perform physical tasks. Robotics is one way of automating work, but not every automated system is a robot. An automatically controlled heating system, for example, does not need a robotic arm.
For an evaluation, weigh benefits against drawbacks in the given context. Faster production may justify expensive robots for a busy car factory, but not for a manufacturer making very few products.
Do not claim that robots never make mistakes or need no people. Correct programming, maintenance and supervision remain important.
