A thin display in which electrically controlled liquid crystals regulate the passage of light to form images or characters.

Revise: Modern materialsA liquid crystal display, or LCD, uses liquid crystals whose orientation changes when a voltage is applied. This changes how much light passes through parts of the display, forming characters or images. The crystals control light rather than producing it themselves.
For LCDs, explain that liquid crystals control light passing through the display; they do not themselves produce the light.
