Paper 2
Revise: Types of Computer NetworksThree main types are personal area networks (PANs), local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs). To distinguish them, consider the geographical area they cover and who owns and manages them.
Specification 4.1.2 · Paper 1
A network covering a large geographical area, often connecting LANs at different sites using telecommunications providers’ infrastructure.
When comparing a LAN and a WAN, make paired points: small versus wide geographical area, and usually single versus collective or distributed ownership.
When comparing LANs and WANs, give paired differences: a LAN covers a small geographical area, whereas a WAN covers a large geographical area.
Use infrastructure ownership as another distinction: LAN equipment is usually owned by its user organisation; WAN connections often use external telecommunications infrastructure.
