A word or symbol placed before a unit to indicate a multiple of that unit, allowing large quantities to be written more compactly.

Revise: Byte PrefixesA prefix goes before a unit name to indicate a multiple of that unit. It changes how we express the quantity, not the amount of data itself. For example, a file containing 1 000 000 bytes can be described more compactly as 1 megabyte, written 1 MB.
Use decimal SI meanings for byte prefixes in this course: kilo means 1000, not 1024.
You do not need to memorise binary-prefix names such as kibi and mebi for this specification.
