Tetrahedral arrangement

The four neighbouring atoms surround each carbon atom in a tetrahedral arrangement. This is three-dimensional: the bonds do not all lie in one flat plane. Each neighbouring carbon atom also bonds to four others, so the pattern continues throughout the diamond.
