Revise: Factors Affecting Reaction RatesSurface area is the area of a solid exposed to its surroundings. Breaking the same mass of solid into smaller pieces exposes more surface: a powder usually reacts faster than large lumps. Increasing temperature also usually speeds up a reaction; cooling slows it down.
