Significant figures

Significant figures communicate the precision of a value. Count from the first non-zero digit: 0.0042 has two significant figures, while 0.00420 has three because the final zero is significant. For multiplication and division, an appropriate answer normally has the same number of significant figures as the given measured value with the fewest significant figures, unless the question specifies otherwise.
