Scientific theory

A scientific theory is an explanation supported by evidence, rather than simply a guess. Theories about the early atmosphere have changed and developed over time as evidence and methods of investigation have improved. The volcanic theory provides an explanation of where the gases came from and how the oceans formed, but its uncertain details should still be described using words such as ‘may have’.
