Revise: Energy Transfer by Electromagnetic WavesThis transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves is called radiation. When radiation is absorbed, its energy is transferred to the absorbing material. The effect depends on the type of wave and the material: the absorber might become warmer or undergo a biological change.
Use ‘energy is transferred’, rather than ‘heat travels’. Infrared radiation transfers energy and can increase an absorber’s temperature.
Absorbing electromagnetic radiation does not always produce just a temperature rise: it can also cause biological changes, such as vitamin D production in skin.
