Revise: Ionizing RadiationsPerceived risk is how dangerous someone thinks an exposure is. Scientific estimates instead use evidence about how often harm occurs under particular conditions. The two can differ because people respond to familiarity, frightening consequences and whether they feel in control.

A perceived risk is how dangerous someone feels an activity is. These are not interchangeable: a person's judgement is not a measurement of likelihood or severity, while an evidence-based estimate may still contain uncertainty.
