In medicine, it can help us make medicines, identify inherited conditions through genetic testing, and treat disease through gene therapy. These are different uses: making a medicine with genetically modified bacteria does not mean that the patient's DNA is changed.

Genetic testing examines a person's DNA for particular alleles or genetic differences. DNA can be obtained from samples containing cells, such as blood or saliva. Testing provides information; it does not itself prevent or cure disease.
