The movement of an electron to a higher energy level after it absorbs energy, while remaining in the atom.

Revise: Electron Arrangements and ExcitationWhen an electron absorbs energy from this radiation, it can move from a lower energy level to a higher one. This change is called excitation.
Distinguish excitation from ionisation: an excited electron is still in the atom, whereas ionisation by electron loss removes an outer electron.
