Captive breeding

Captive breeding programmes can increase the number of individuals while protecting them from threats in the wild. Animals may later be released to support an existing wild population or re-establish one that has disappeared. Botanic gardens can similarly grow endangered plants from seeds or cuttings for possible reintroduction.
