Separately, progress in understanding biochemical processes—the chemical reactions taking place inside organisms—provided further evidence for comparison. Organisms that appeared similar could differ internally or chemically. These discoveries led scientists to propose new models of classification rather than keeping every traditional grouping unchanged.
