Alkali metal

Definition

A Group 1 metal whose atoms have one electron in their outer shell and form ions with a charge of $+1$ by losing that electron.

The metals in Group 1 of the periodic table are lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and francium. They are called the alkali metals because they form alkaline solutions when they react with water.

Lithium, sodium and potassium are alkali metals. Chlorine, bromine and iodine are halogens, while helium, neon and argon are noble gases. Hydrogen is positioned above the Group 1 metals, but it is not an alkali metal.
