Paper 2
Revise: RomeThe Senate was an influential council of elite men which advised Rome’s magistrates. Many senators were former magistrates, so they brought experience of governing to its debates. Its authority rested partly on this experience, partly on its members’ wealth, status and connections.
Distinguish the Senate from the citizen assemblies: the Senate advised magistrates and strongly influenced policy, while the repeal proposal was put to an assembly.
