Revise: Paterfamilias and PatronageThe paterfamilias exercised patria potestas, meaning ‘paternal power’, over descendants subject to his authority. He acted as a rule maker and judge within the family. Traditional accounts attributed extremely extensive powers to him, including selling dependants into bondage and exercising power over life and death.
